Coordination with local levels emphasized in relief and rehabilitation effort


Kathmandu: The NDRRMA has stressed the importance of coordination with local levels for distribution of relief materials and rehabilitation to those affected by the recent rain-triggered disaster.

The meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) here today decided to carry out relief distribution operation through one-door system and implement relief and rehabilitation operation in coordination among three-tier governments, said Dr Dijan Bhattarai, Spokesperson of the NDRRMA.

The Authority, adopting the integrated system for relief management, has decided to immediately start relief and rehabilitation efforts through one-door system.

Dr Bhattarai further shared that the meeting, in a bid to streamline relief efforts, decided that no individual and organizations would independently collect funds for the disaster survivors and any contributions, be it in cash and in-kind and that it should be channeled through local levels.

According to him, preparation is underway to pr
ovide information on the bank account numbers for various funds including the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund, for those willing to contribute to this cause.

He also shared that the meeting did not decide on seeking international aid from various donor agencies and countries for post-disaster relief and rehabilitation operation.

It may be noted that the persistent rainfall across the country on September 27, 28 and 29 wreaked havoc incurring heavy losses of lives and properties.

As per the Ministry of Home Affairs’ statistic, as many as 204 people have lost their lives so far and 33 others have gone missing in the floods, landslides and inundation caused by downpour.
