UML to prevent separate contesting panels in national congress

The main opposition CPN (UML) has unveiled a new rule preventing the party leaders from forming separate panels to contest in the party’s national congress.

The central committee meeting on Monday approved the party’s statute amendment proposal to this effect, barring the party leaders to set up separate panels for the leadership selection from the upcoming general convention, UML central office secretary Sher Bahadur Tamang said. In the eighth and ninth general conventions of the UML, the leaders had contested by forming their panels for the key posts including chairman, vice-chairs, general secretaries and secretaries.

The fresh move is expected to end groupism in the UML. According to Tamang, the general convention or convention will elect only chairperson and members adding that the elected central committee shall elected other office-bearers in the party.

As per the new provision, the UML will have one chairperson, two vice-chairs, one general secretary, two assistant general secretaries and seven secretaries. The amended statute mentions that the office bearers of the UML will be picked on the basis of inclusive principle.
