Kathmandu: Chairman of Press Council Nepal, Bal Krishna Basnet, has said the media’s trend of avoiding news sources must be deterred. Using news without mentioning its source is illegitimate, he added.
During an interaction at RSS central office, Basnet said professionalism and adherence to code are imperative for journalists. He also viewed that media can adopt self regulation.
Press Council Nepal has not only been enquiring but also seeking clarification and taking action against the journalists and media flouting code of conduct, according to him.
Basnet underlined the need for RSS to discourage the trend of not giving credit to RSS in its news, photos and videos that various media use.
On the occasion, Executive Chairman of RSS, Dharmendra Jha, said the mass media can adopt a mechanism of self-regulation. “RSS is for self-regulation, for which it has launched its RSS style book,” Jha said, adding that technological development had impacted journalism tremendously, which warrants attention and study fr
om various sectors.
General Manager Siddha Raj Rai also viewed cooperation with Press Council Nepal was essential for media houses to foster professional and accountable journalism. He appreciated Council’s initiative of reaching media houses and discussing code of conduct and hearing complaints.
The interaction also featured the issues like modern challenges in journalism and measures that could be adopted for the address.
Meanwhile, Press Council Nepal’s Chairman Basnet visited the photo exhibition organized at RSS central office and garnered knowledge on the development activities reflected in the photos.
