BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Longterm survival rates for various types of cancers have substantially improved in the Sultanate since the last few years, due to advances made in early diagnosis and treatment services provided at The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC), New Brunei Daily reported.
TBCC has recently introduced the use of their latest cancer treatment facilities available at the centre, specifically in radiotherapy services, in a major effort to upgrade and advocate the procedures involved in treating cancer.
Because of good facilities and good treatment, many of our cancer patients have survived longer, said Dr Babu Sukumaran, Medical Director of Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre and TBCC, during a press conference announcing the introduction of the facilities available at the centre.
We have stage four cancer patients who survived even after four or five years, he added.
According to Dr Jamsari Khalid, Consultant Radiation Oncologist and the Head of the Radiotherapy Department at TBCC, since radiotherapy services first began operations in 2016, it was found that 35 per cent of their patients were diagnosed with stage 3 or stage 4 cancer.
Fortunately, now with TBCC's Department of Radiotherapy equipped with new technologically advanced cancer treatment facilities, namely two new radiotherapy linear accelerators the Varian Trubeam and Varian Edge, survival rates have improved tremendously especially among patients of the higher cancer stages groups.NNNBERNAMA
