Choi Soon-sil, a woman at the center of a snowballing scandal involving President Park Geun-hye, returned home Sunday morning.
A prosecutor said that Choi voluntarily returned home at 7:30 a.m. through a British airline from Heathrow Airport in England.
Choi's return will likely lead to a breakthrough in the prosecution's ongoing investigation into mounting allegations involving the president's longtime confidant.
Choi was allegedly involved in setting up and raising about 80 billion won from conglomerates for the Mir and K-Sports foundations. She is suspected of embezzling the funds through her own companies, The Blue K and Widec Sports.
Choi is also suspected of reviewing and editing presidential speeches in advance and confidential Cheong Wa Dae documents on defense, foreign affairs, economy and inter-Korean relations.
The president effectively admitted on Tuesday that Choi edited her speeches in the early years of her presidency. Park said in her apology that Choi advised her on expressions in her speeches and public relations during the 2012 presidential election.
The prosecution will soon summon and question Choi over the allegations.
