Choo Warns to Take Steps to Suspend Presidential Power

nepalnewsgazette.com November 18, 2016     Comment Closed     General

The leader of South Korea's main political opposition is warning President Park Geun-hye to give up power voluntarily or risk legal measures aimed at taking power away.

Democratic Party Chairwoman Choo Mi-ae said Friday that her party is examining measures to suspend powers granted to Park under the Constitution if she does not step down.

In a party meeting, Choo accused the president of deliberately delaying the process of investigating the Choi Soon-sil affair so she can rally support among friendly factions in her ruling party.

She says the president has been working to discredit ongoing mass protests against her administration. The opposition leader accused the president of rallying hard-line supporters to incite clashes at the otherwise peaceful gatherings, which she claimed the president may use as a pretext for declaring martial law.
