Civic Group Objects Military Intel Accord with Japan

nepalnewsgazette.com November 11, 2016     Comment Closed     Human Rights

A pending intelligence sharing agreement between South Korea and Japan is getting some pushback from colonial-era independence fighters.

The Korea Liberation Association, which represents freedom fighters during the Japanese colonization era, says it opposes sharing intelligence with Japan until fundamental historical issues are resolved.

In a statement Friday, the group said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe should withdraw his territorial claims to the Korean Dokdo islets, sincerely apologize for Tokyo's colonial aggression and promise not to distort history textbooks ever again.

The statement also expresses concern the agreement could pave the way for Japan to eventually send its Self-Defense Forces to Korea under the pretext of protecting Japanese people.
