The European Parliament has adopted a resolution denouncing North Korea's nuclear test conducted last month and urging the regime to dismantle its nuclear and missile programs.
According to the South Korean mission to the European Union, the European Parliament on Thursday adopted the resolution on nuclear security and nonproliferation through a vote during a general assembly.
The parliament said that it condemns Pyongyang for carrying out its fifth nuclear test and for rejecting multiple UN Security Council resolutions including 2270 adopted this March.
The European Commission, which equals the executive branch of the EU, has issued statements denouncing North Korea whenever the North carried out nuclear tests or launched ballistic missiles since early this year. However, it's the first time in three years since 2013 for the EU's legislative branch to adopt a resolution criticizing the North's nuclear and missile ambitions.
The European Parliament also urged Pyongyang to abandon its nuke and missile programs in a complete, verifiable and irrevocable manner and thereby refrain from additional provocations. It also urged the North to suspend all related activities, return to the dialogue table and immediately implement its international obligations stated in various resolutions by the UN and the International Atomic Energy Agency and other global regulations on disarmament and nonproliferation.
