Five civilians, including women and children, were killed while six others were injured after a rocket slammed into a residential area in northern Takhar province on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported.
"A rocket or mortar struck a residential area in Arab Kakal village of Dasht-e-Qala district this morning, killing five civilians on the spot and injuring six others," provincial police spokesman Abdul Khalil Asir said.
Without identifying those behind the attack, he said an investigation was underway to ascertain the culprits responsible.
Villagers believed the attack was the work of the Taliban or Afghanistan's security forces.
