Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader Dr Shekhar Koirala said good governance, transparency and accountability was a must in democracy.

In his address to the ninth convention of the Democratic Thought Society Kaski and a seminar 'Periodic election, democratic consolidation and economic development' today, Dr Koirala reiterated that good governance, transparency and accountability were fundamental conditions of democracy.

Noting that periodic election, democratic consolidation and economic development are inter-connected, he stressed the need to spur production along with financial good governance for prosperity.

The country's purchasing capacity was not in a good condition now, he said, adding ballooning trade deficit of Rs 1800 billion was a serious issue.

Dr Koirala further said that running government and electoral alliance were completely different things. He pointed out a need to make serious review on the issues, including impacts of electoral alliance on party organization in coming days.

NC central member Madhu Acharya said NC should work in a way to address people's real needs. He urged the Democratic Thought Society to host dialogue and debate on the policies and thoughts the party should adopt.

Society's central chair Dr Kedarnarsingh KC said democracy can be consolidated only when the economic development was made possible. He said periodic election was a beauty of democracy.

On the occasion, Society's senior vice-chair Kulchandra Wagle said the organization has so far hosted social dialogue and brought tout publications in favour of democratic consolidation.

Also speaking on the occasion were Society's general-secretary Gokarna Raj Aryal, former minister duo, Yagya Bahadur Thapa and Mahadev Gurung, Pokhara University VC Prof Dr Prem Narayan Aryal, NC Kaski President Kishor Dutta Baral and Kamal Raj Sapkota of Democratic University Teachers' Association, among others.

A delegation of the Society had also called on Gandaki Province Chief Minister Krishna Chandra Pokharel on upcoming civic elections and integrity. ---
