The Election Commission, Nepal (ECN) organized an interaction program on gender-based violence in elections, December 2, 2016, in solidarity to the 16 days' campaign against gender-based violence. Inaugurating the program, Hon. Chief Election Commissioner Dr. Ayodhee Prasad Yadav stressed the need for concerted efforts from political parties to improve women's participation in politics. He expressed satisfaction with the increased number of women District Election Officers (DEOs) at the ECN.
Hon. Election Commissioner Ila Sharma highlighted that the ECN is pursuing its 'gender and inclusion policy' aiming at increasing women's participation throughout the electoral cycle. On the occasion, ECN Joint Secretary Surya Prasad Sharma presented on women's participation in politics, violence against women in elections, and the efforts made by the ECN in improving gender and inclusion in the electoral process.
Current and former members of parliament, women human rights defenders, and representatives of Inter-party Women Network, election observation organizations, government agencies and I/NGOs were among the 74 (50 women) participants. The program was organized in collaboration with IFES Nepal.
