Japan Concerned about Scandal Affecting Military Pact

nepalnewsgazette.com November 5, 2016     Comment Closed     General

Japan is worried that the political scandal engulfing South Korea may affect discussions on the General Security of Military Information Agreement that the two countries are pushing to sign.

This is according to Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun daily that cited a Japanese foreign ministry official as saying that the two countries' foreign and defense ministry officials agreed last week on the need to swiftly conclude the intelligence sharing pact.

The official said that one more round of talks will enable the completion of the agreement.

However the newspaper also cited a more concerning view from a Tokyo official saying the Park administration will not be able to push forward with the deal which the opposition objects.

The report also projected the political situation in Seoul may affect a trilateral summit with China that is being pursued in Tokyo in early December.

A Japanese government official was quoted as saying that President Park Geun-hye may not be able to venture on an overseas trip in present circumstances.
