The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea(MPK) has stressed that an independent counsel that will investigate mounting allegations surrounding Choi Soon-sil must be carried out in line with a special law.
MPK Senior Deputy Floor Leader Park Wan-ju unveiled his party's stance on the independent counsel during a policy coordination meeting at the National Assembly on Thursday.
Park said an independent probe based on a special law is more appropriate to handle the latest case rather than a permanent independent counsel appointed by the president as the presidential office could be subject to investigations.
The vice floor leader then urged the president to announce before the public that she will also undergo an investigation.
Meanwhile, MPK Floor Leader Woo Sang-ho said he believes that the MPK and ruling Saenuri Party should promptly meet and cooperate to fine-tune details over the envisioned independent counsel so that it will be able to thoroughly carry out the investigation.
