The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea(MPK) has ramped up its offensive over various allegations surrounding President Park Geun-hye's longtime confidant Choi Soon-sil.
While dubbing the case as the "Choi Soon-sil Gate," the MPK on Friday held a Supreme Council meeting on the issue. The meeting came as the National Assembly's House Steering Committee was holding an inspection of the presidential office.
MPK Chairwoman Choo Mi-ae said the essence of the scandal is Choi's unlawful exercise of influence using her relationship with the president. Choo called on Park to provide an explanation and reveal what she will do to handle the matter, citing that the president, more than anyone, has emphasized that people in power have that moral responsibility.
The party's floor leader, Woo Sang-ho, said the allegations should be immediately subject to an investigation carried out by a special team of prosecutors.
Choi is suspected of being involved in raising a large amount of funds for the establishments of the Mir and K-Sports foundations through influence peddling.
