Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that it was necessary to make Nepali Congress and ruling alliance candidates victorious to safeguard the democracy and constitution.

During a meeting with central office-bearers of the Nepal Press Union here today, the NC pointed out the need of ensuring a win for the candidates in favour of democracy and change in local-level election scheduled for May 13 to protect constitution, democracy and republicanism.

Stating that the five-party alliance was formed to protect and strengthen federal democratic republic, constitution and basic norms and value of democracy, he expressed the view that electoral alliance and collaboration have been made among democratic forces formed for a change.

The NC President further said that democracy would be strengthened only if NC becomes strong, mentioning that NC has always stood for democracy, press freedom and citizen rights and it would continue with the same stance in the days to come.

On the occasion, President of the Press Union, Badri Sigdel, drew the attention of PM Deuba on various issues including preparation of Union's ninth general convention, role of media sector for the protection of democracy and situation of country's media sector.

The Press Union has scheduled to organise its ninth general convention in Makawanpur on May 27 and 28.
