Nepali Congress (NC) leaders have said that the party’s 14th general convention would be held by mid-September. At a virtual programme organised by the party’s district presidents, the leaders said that party’s general convention would be concluded as per the given schedule.
On the occasion, party’s senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel said that conducting a debate whether the election would be held in a democratic party like NC was unfortunate.
He said that such a situation would not have created if the NC had moved ahead by preparing a schedule on the party’s 14th general convention.
Poudel was of the view that NC should be made more systematic to make it a leading force in the country.
Likewise, NC vice president Bimalendra Nidhi said that the NC has the constitutional obligation to conduct its 14th general convention by mid-September.
Since the list of party’s active members has come from all districts except for some, the party should go for general convention by giving a final touch to list of active members, Nidhi stated.
Nidhi also directed the district presidents and leaders to prepare for the general convention adding that the NC was serious to follow the constitution and laws.
During the programme, former general secretary of NC Prakash Man Singh said that the upcoming 14th general convention of the party was crucial to bring about positive changes in the NC.
“All the leaders and cadres have equal responsibility to conduct the general convention in a free and fair manner,” he said while asking why there is always dispute in the NC over the issue of active membership.
NC central committee member Dr Shekhar Koirala said that leaders and cadres of the party should move ahead being united to save the party while another member Pradeep Giri shared that the 14th general convention of the party should be held on the slated time.
Giri further said that the party should move ahead interpreting its policy and ideology in a new way as per the time.
Similarly, another central committee member Gagan Kumar Thapa opined that this situation has surfaced in the party due to non-observation of party’s rules and regulations.
He further said that the whole party should not be made the captive of indecisions due to dispute over active membership in some districts.
Likewise, political analyst Puranjan Acharya opined that the NC should hold its general convention on time to present NC as the alternative of the communist.
Senior advocates—Harihar Dahal and Yadunath Khanal shared that the NC should hold its 14th general convention on the slated time as the constitution has clearly mentioned the provision that any political party should hold its general convention within five years.
They added that the upcoming general convention should hold serious discussion regarding making party’s statute as per the constitution.
