Neel Prasad Bhandari, a noted social activist from Sunkoshi rural municipality-1, Thokarpa passed away on Wednesday. He was 82.
Bhandari has presented an example that even denude forestland can be transformed in to a green forest with community protection.
Born in 1995 BS, Bhandari joined politics in 2017 BS at the age of 22 and was elected Thokarpa, ward President of then Village Panchayat.
He was politically groomed and became deputy chair and chair of Thokarpa village and dedicated his efforts for village development including education, health, forest, road and bridge. Importantly, he took the initiative to plant 500 saplings in the deserted forest land in 2030 BS by mobilizing villagers. He engaged his efforts to conserve forest thinking that de-forestation would cause negative environmental effects.
He also struggled hard to mobilize community people for the conservation of the trees.
The then government had handed the responsibility of forest conservation of Thokarpa to its campaigner Bhandari and then forest expert Dr Tej Bahadur Singh.
It may be noted that Nepali Congress central member and then Minister for Information and Communications Mohan Bahadur Basnet had also felicitated Bhandari in recognition to his contributions.
