The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded with the government to investigate the incident of death of three youths in West Rukum and bring to book the perpetrators. Issuing a press statement here today, the human rights watchdog agency of the country expressed deep sorrow over the inhuman incident in which three youths were killed while three others have gone missing since last Saturday.
Demanding an impartial and thorough probe into the incident, the NHRC has said that the murder of Nawaraj Bishwakarma,T ikaram Sunar and Ganesh Buda had drawn its serious attention which, it said, which was a culmination of caste-based violence.
Bhiswakarma was beaten to death by the villagers in Soti of Chaujahari Munciplaity West Rukum on last Saturday. The incident had taken after Bishwakarma went to meet his so called upper caste girlfriend ensuing a caste-based confrontation between the boy’s side and the girl’s side.
The NHRC has also demanded appropriate compensation to the bereaved families and urged the government to strictly implement zero-tolerance against the caste-based discrimination and untouchability still strongly prevailing in many parts of the country.
Furthermore, the NHRC has asserted that the constitution of Nepal had provisioned Right against Untouchability and Discrimination to ensure the right to dignified life to all people in the country irrespective of their caste, race, community, origin and bodily condition in any private and public place.
According to the NHRC, West Rukum incident was against all the legal provisions of Nepal put in place to eliminate caste-based discrimination. The incident, as put by NHRC, was also a violation of the international conventions against caste-based discriminations that Nepal is signatory to.
All the necessary correspondence have been made by the NHRC to the stakeholder agencies such as its Karnali State office, local police and local administration in Jumla and West Rukum to monitor the situation of human rights in these districts.
