Cultivation of paddy in Jhapa has been limited to only five per cent till today, according to the Agriculture Knowledge Centre. Jhapa is known as a fertile land for paddy production.
Though the monsoon took place in the country on time, only five per cent paddy has been planted so far as farmers delayed sowing of the paddy seeds. Centre Chief Nilkamal Singh said that plantation of paddy saplings would be completed in the district by the third week of July.
Out of 87,500 hectares of land where paddy is going to be planted in the district this year, paddy has been planted only in 4,375 hectares so far.
Kankai, Ninda, Tangting, Palita, Khudunabari, Siddhinahar, Bhuteni rivulets are the main sources of irrigation in the district. Only, eight per cent of paddy plantation in the district is done with rain water.
