As the prosecution specified President Park Geun-hye's alleged involvement in the influence-peddling scandal, opposition heavyweights have called for discussions to impeach the president.
The Democratic Party's former chairman Moon Jae-in, the People's Party former chief Ahn Cheol-soo, Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon and five other politicians on Sunday held an emergency meeting following the prosecution's accusation of the president.
The eight opposition heavyweights agreed at the meeting to request the three main and minor opposition parties and the parliament to begin discussing the option of impeaching the president.
While arguing that the president committed a grave crime that meets the conditions for impeaching a president set out in the Constitution, the politicians also claimed that Park must stop pursuing key pending issues, including the planned signing of a military intelligence pact with Japan.
