The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea(MPK) and the minor opposition People's Party have described the Park Geun-hye administration as a government virtually ruled by Choi Soon-sil.
The MPK held a general meeting of its lawmakers on Wednesday and confirmed a decision reached a day earlier by the party's Supreme Council to seek an independent counsel to look into various suspicions surrounding Choi.
MPK Chairwoman Choo Mi-ae said at the meeting that it is not too much to say that the current government has become one ruled by Choi, calling her a regent. Choo said that Choi, who has no particular occupation, had cunningly assumed exclusive rights over state affairs.
The chairwoman said government ministers are nothing but puppets and urged Cabinet members to voluntarily tender their resignations.
Head of the People's Party's policy committee Kim Song-sik said during an emergency meeting that the overall vulnerability in state affairs must be addressed by a full overhaul of the presidential office and a Cabinet reshuffle, including the resignation of the prime minister.
He also urged the president to step away from a factional position, citing that there are talks within the ruling party on the need for the president to withdraw her Saenuri affiliation.
