The ruling Saenuri Party has hailed President Park Geun-hye's call for a constitutional revision.
The ruling camp said it would be timely and appropriate to begin related discussions during the current regular session period, vowing to closely study the opinions of experts as well as ordinary citizens.
While also welcoming the president's proposal, the opposition camp, on its part, stressed that related discussions must be carried out at a national level, putting behind strategic gains of political parties.
The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea said though revising the constitution is necessary, the move should not be used to cover up corruption scandals, including what it calls the Choi Soon-sil Gate, or to avoid drops in approval ratings.
The minor opposition People's Party also underlined that the belated call for a constitutional revision should not be used as a tool to conceal political corruption.
