Proposal seeking consideration on drinking water bill passed

The meeting of the National Assembly on Monday passed a proposal seeking consideration on the Drinking Water Bill, 2076 received from the House of Representatives. The proposal was passed unanimously.

Responding to the issues raised during discussion on the principles of the bill in the meeting, Minister for Water Supply Umakant Chaudhary said that since drinking water and sanitation are fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution, it is the responsibility of the government to ensure them. Expressing concern over the drying up of water sources in the mountains, Minister Chaudhary said that it would be easier to meet the goals of sustainable development with the passage of this bill.

The parliamentarians demanded to bring a plan for the easy availability of clean drinking water by protecting the local rivers and to arrange one water tap for every house.

MPs Dr Khimlal Devkota, Dr Bimala Rai Poudel, Anita Devkota and others participated in the discussion.

The national assembly will meet again at 1:00 pm on July 20.
