Civic groups and thousands of citizens demanded President Park Geun-hye's resignation in a massive rally over a snowballing scandal involving her longtime confidant Choi Soon-sil.
About 50 civic groups including the country's largest umbrella labor union the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, gathered at Cheonggy Stream Square in Seoul at 6 p.m. Saturday to hold a joint candlelight rally.
The participants called for a thorough investigation into mounting allegations involving Choi and the president's resignation.
The organizers estimate about 20-thousand people took part in the rally, while police put the number at around ten-thousand. The demonstration continued into early Sunday.
Similar protest rallies were held nationwide on Saturday including Busan, Ulsan, Gwangju, Jeonju and Jeju Island.
