Commanding the support of 50 Provincial Assembly (PA) members, Rajendra Rai, the Parliamentary Party leader of CPN (Unified Socialist) has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Province 1 today. Province 1 Chief Somnath Adhikari 'Pyasi' appointed him to the high post.
Rai has the support of Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), People's Socialist Party and one PA member from Federal Democratic Forum which command 21, 15, 3 and 1 seat respectively in the Provincial Assembly. To retain majority government, 47 seats are enough in the 92-member Assembly.
On Monday, Chief Minister Bhim Acharya tendered his resignation from his 68-day-long tenure as the second CM of the Province. Acharya was short of six seats to secure majority.
Personal life and political profile of CM Rai
Rai was born to father Nagendra Bahadur Rai and mother Dhankumari Rai at Surke of Bhojpur, which now falls within Sadananda Municipality Ward Number 10, on 29 June 1970. He is the youngest among four siblings. He tied the nuptial knot with inter-caste spouse Sobha Pathak in 2003.
Rai forayed into politics from the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), a sister wing of CPN (UML), during his school days. He was Secretary at the School Committee of the ANNFSU. He spent 20 years in ANNFSU and served as the two-time Chair of the largest student organization in Nepal from 2000 to 2002, and from 2002 to 2004.
He was elected three times at the Free Student Union of RR Campus of Kathmandu from 1988 to 1992, from 1992 to 1994 and from 1994 to 1996.
Rai began mainstream politics from Student-Special District Committee of Kathmandu district. He was nominated as the Central Committee Member of CPN UML after its Eight National Congress in 2012.
He was elected as the Central Committee Member in the Ninth National Congress of CPN (UML) in 2014.
Leader Rai was elected as the Provincial Assembly member from Bhojpur Constituency 1 (1) by defeating Ajambar Kangbang of the then Federal Democratic Forum by almost 8 thousand votes in the first Provincial Elections of 2017. Rajendra Rai had 19,297 votes while Ajambar Kangbang had obtained just 11,551 votes.
Before serving as PA members and now the Chief Minister, Rajendra Rai had also worked as Public Relations Advisor to the former PM Madhav Kumar Nepal from 2009 to 2011.
