The ruling Saenuri Party is calling for the replacement of senior presidential secretaries and Cabinet ministers to assume responsibility for the controversy surrounding President Park Geun-hye's longtime friend Choi Soon-sil.
Saenuri Party Chairman Lee Jung-hyun said in a news conference Wednesday that the party's Supreme Council agreed on the need for a drastic personnel reshuffle in an emergency meeting held earlier in the day.
The demand was officially delivered to senior presidential secretary for political affairs Kim Jae-won.
The Saenuri chief said the president's quick apology on Tuesday shows that she is well aware of the seriousness of the situation. Lee added, however, that the president's apology alone is not enough to settle the issue and all those involved must be punished through a transparent investigation.
