Saenuri Floor Leader Chung Jin-suk has proposed holding full-scale discussions with the opposition camp to set up a special parliamentary committee tasked with amending the Constitution.
In a news conference on Thursday, Chung said that the Choi Soon-sil scandal should serve as a catalyst for a constitutional amendment, not an obstacle. He stressed that there is no time for hesitation, saying that the Choi scandal clearly reveals the limits of the single five-year presidential term.
He again advocated the justification of a constitutional revision, saying that it will disperse the power and authority concentrated on the president.
Chung denied speculations that the constitutional amendment proposal is an attempt to cover up allegations surrounding Choi's meddling in state affairs. He said he has no intention to play down the scandal or avoid finding the truth behind it.
