Sons could not perform final rites without COIVD-19 report

Web Desk June 4, 2020     No Comment     General

The sons of a person in Salyan district who recently died due to unknown reason (supposedly COVID-19) have not been able to perform the final rites of their deceased father as the COVID-19 test of their father was still awaited.

The nasal and swab of all those 711 COVID-19 suspected quarantined in various quarantine facilities in the district was collected on May 26 and sent to Surkhet district. The result of 158 persons have come out so far among them 42 had tested positive for the deadly infection while the result of 553 were awaited, according to Bangad Kupinde Municipality in the district.

The wait for results have led to confusion and commotion among the persons who were tested for COVID-19 as well as their families and kin, according to Bangad Kupinde Municipality’s Health Department chief Basudev Pokharel.

Yadav BK and Nokraj BK of Bangad Kupinde Municipality 6 in the district could not go to their house to perform the final rites of their deceased father. Yadav said, “We have no idea when the test’s result comes. We have been asked to wait for the report before leaving for home for final rites.”

The 17 COVID-19 persons who were reported to have contracted COVID-19 on last Saturday have been staying in the quarantine facility at Prabhakar Secondary School and at Bangad Campus.

Other 12 infected persons were kept in isolation at Salyan Hospital. Unable to accommodate all the COVID-19 patients in the Hospital ward here, some were kept in a makeshift isolation in the balcony of the Hospital.

The infected ones have been subjected to scorn and stigma in the quarantine facility. One infected persons bemoaned, “Those suspected ones staying with us in the quarantine facilities admonish us. They tend to subjugate us while we try to avail the basic facilities in the quarantine such as toilet and tap.”

Chief District Officer of Salyan Shivaram Pokharel said that efforts were underway to streamline quarantine facilities. He also said that he was making effort for the report of the test.
