Speaker Sapkota consults with officials working for disaster risk reduction

Speaker of House of Representatives (HoR) Agni Prasad Sapkota has held talks with the officials of National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on ways to reduce the risk of natural disasters happened in different districts in the early days of this year’s monsoon.

Speaker Sapkota met with the top leadership of the Authority and experts of this field regarding the loss incurred by flooding, landslide and inundation as well as the ways to combating such disasters.

The meeting was convened at the Speaker’s office in Singha Durbar and the Authority’s CEO Anil Pokhrel and other members informed the Speaker about the humanitarian loss and physical damages caused due to the recent monsoon flooding in Sindhupalchowk, Manang, Chitwan and other districts of the country.

The officials also informed Speaker about the ongoing efforts taken to combat the effects of disasters.

On the occasion, Speaker Sapkota urged to immediately address the problems faced by the disaster-hit areas by making immediate, short-term and long-term plans while adding to act by making a separate unit to work in Sindhupalchowk district, the area that suffered the most from the recent natural disasters.

Prior to this, Speaker Sapkota had consulted with the experts of this field last Sunday as well.

During the meetings, the experts have suggested to working under a separate framework and planning in Sindhupalchowk district given its vulnerability.

Experts Dr Gangalal Tuladhar, Dr Hari Krishna Shrestha, Dr Ranjan Kumar Dahal, Dr Krishna Devkota and Dr Rabinraj Niraula were present during the meeting with the Speaker.

On Tuesday itself, Speaker Sapkota had acquired information about the status of Sindhupalchowk district from Chief District Officer Arun Pokhrel, according to Speaker Sapkota’s Press Expert Shreedhar Neupane.
