Study on risk of earthquake and fire in Nepalgunj to be conducted

The Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City is going to conduct study on risk of earthquake and fire in two wards, which are at the risk, for strengthening urban preparedness for effective disaster response.

The Urban Disaster and Earthquake Preparedness and Response Project would carry out survey on 1,100 households in ward no 3 and 7 in the Sub-Metropolitan City, informed Nepal Red Cross Society’s (NRCS) Banke branch technical chief Shiva Subedi.

UNICEF and NRCS are going to coordinate efforts with the Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City to enhance the understanding of risks of earthquake and fire in the communities, which are at the risk, as well as densely populated areas. Furthermore, in participation of these communities, the local government will demonstrate preparedness measures.

The survey would assign five technical human resources for two weeks while the project would run for a year, shared Subedi.

A recently meeting held by Mayor Prashant Bista, deputy mayor Kamaruddin Rai and district president of NRCS Govardan Singh among others took the decision to this effect.

Under this project, technical experts would be mobilized at on-site to identify the houses at risk and to construct structures for disaster preparedness, informed Prakash DC, Sub-Metropolitan’s disaster source person.

The Sub-Metropolitan City will implement insurance programme once the identification of risky houses would be done.
