THAILAND: CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL HOTELS IN KRABI

BANGKOK, About 52 hostels in the resort province of Krabi have been shut down, forcing 500 tourists to cancel their bookings as the authorities have launched a crackdown on illegal hotels in Ao Nang area since the beginning of this month, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.

Krabi vice governor Apinan Pueakpong convened a meeting with hostel operators, ordered to close their businesses and relevant parties on Monday.

Hostel operators were informed that they could reopen their accommodation service to tourists again after they legally seek permission for renovation of the buildings.

They were found to have renovated the structures without permission. The problem will be solved soon if they quickly submit their document to the authorities.

The operation to check the hostel businesses is aimed at creating confidence among tourists, he said.

Krabi's Muang district chief, Sattha Thongkham said that if any hostels breach the order and open the service to tourists, they could face harsher punishment.

The police will summon owners of the hostels to acknowledge charges for violation of the Building Control Act and legal action will be taken against the culprits. -- NNN-BERNAMA
