Minister for Finance Bishnu Prasad Poudel has pledged to lay emphasis on information and communications technology (ICT) in the upcoming year's policy and programme and budget.
He said this at an interaction 'Role of Telecom Sector in Gross Domestic Production jointly organized here today by Society of Economic Journalists-Nepal (SEJON) and Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA).
Minister Poudel called for increasing budget in the information and communications technology as it triggers multiple sectors to grow.
"Importance of communication has increased in all sectors", he said, adding it is equally important in the economic development of the country.
He also stressed the need to carry out study on the role of telecom sector in the economic growth of the country.
The minster also shared that the government was swiftly working to combat against the coronavirus pandemic so as to protect human lives.
Also speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chairperson of National Planning Commission (NPC) Prof Dr Pushpa Raj Kandel said as ICT is associated with all other sectors it should be developed as an industry.
NTA Chairperson Puruswottam Khanal informed that the Authority has intensified its work to reach internet access to each citizen so as to realize the target of Digital Nepal.
Nepal Telecom's Director General Dilliram Khanal said several problems surfaced in telecommunication sector, including networking would be fixed at the earliest.
SEJON Chair Bhim Gautam called for the government to spur investment on ICT as it has multiple effects on the development of the country. ---
