Finland PM greets Sheikh Hasina on reelection as PM

DHAKA, Finland Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her reelection as Prime Minister of Bangladesh. In a greeting letter wrote to her, the Finland premier said “I wish to extend to you my congratulations on your renewed term as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the formation of a new government for your country.” He added, “The friendly relations between our countries provide a solid foundation to further develop our cooperation, and I am looking forward to partnerships across many fields for our mutual benefit.” Petteri Orpo ended, “Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

AL to hold joint-meeting on Wed

DHAKA, Awami League leaders will hold a joint meeting with the presidents and general secretaries of the party’s Dhaka city north and south units and associate bodies on Wednesday next. The meeting will be held at the party’s Bangabandhu Avenue central office at 3:30pm. AL general secretary Obaidul Quader will chair it. All concerned have been requested to remain present in due time.

AL’s joint meeting Monday

DHAKA, Awami League (AL) will hold a joint meeting at the party’s Bangabandhu Avenue central office at 3pm on Monday. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will chair it, said a press release. AL central working committee members, advisory council members and presidents and general secretaries of party’s Dhaka city north, south units and all associate bodies have been requested to remain present in the meeting on time.

AL joint meeting tomorrow

DHAKA, A joint meeting of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) with Dhaka city south, north and Dhaka district AL as well as its associate bodies presidents and general secretaries will be held at Dhaka District AL office in the city’s Tejgaon here at 4pm tomorrow. AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader will preside over the meeting, said a press release signed by AL office secretary Barrister Biplab Barua. He (Quader) has requested all concerned to attend the meeting in time.

Dilip Barua congratulates Sheikh Hasina for landslide victory in election

DHAKA, General Secretary of Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal Dilip Barua has congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her landslide victory in the 12th general election. Hasan Mahmud wins Chattogram-7 for 4th time

CHATTOGRAM, Awami League Joint General Secretary and Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has been elected unofficially in Chattogram-7 constituency for the fourth consecutive time. Assistant Returning Officer and Ranguniya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Raihan Mehebub announced the results at 9 pm tonight. Dr Hasan Mahmud bagged 1,98,976 votes while his closest contestant Islami Front candidate Advocate Iqbal Hasan got only 9,301 votes. Chattogram-7 constituency encompasses Ranguniya and some part of Boalkhali upazila with 3,13,091 votes. Since morning, there were long queues of voters at the polling stations to exercise their franchise in a festive and peaceful manner. Besides, Jatiya Party candidate Musa Ahmed Rana bagged 2,308 votes, Trinamul BNP candidate Khorshed Alam got 1,331 votes, Islamic Front candidate Ahmed Reza got 1,390 votes and Supreme Party candidate Morshed Alam bagged 1,130 votes from the parliamentary seat in the 12th Jatiya Sangsad polls.

Sheikh Hasina wins Gopalganj-3 for 8th time

GOPALGANJ, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been elected unofficially in Gopalganj-3 constituency for the eighth time. Returning Officer and Gopalganj deputy commissioner Kazi Mahbubul Alam announced the results at 8.30pm tonight. Sheikh Hasina bagged 2,49,962 votes while her closest contestant Bangladesh Supreme Party candidate M Nizamuddin Laskar got only 469 votes. Gopalganj-3 constituency encompasses Tungipara and Kotalipara upazila with 2,90,300 votes. Since morning, there were long queues of voters at polling stations to exercise their voting rights from the parliamentary seat in the 12th Jatiya Sangsad polls in a festive manner. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was elected from this constituency in 1954 election as a Juktofront candidate. Since 1986, Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina has been elected from this constituency for the eighth time, including this year.

All set for Sunday’s national election in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, All necessary preparations for holding the Sunday’s 12th national election were completed as the Election Commission and local district administration are working relentlessly for holding the parliament election successfully. In Rajshahi, Returning Officer Shamim Ahmed accompanied by other officials distributed election materials to the election officers at Hazi Muhammad Mohsin High School today. He said elections will be held in 4,963 booths of 770 centres in six constituencies in the district and there are 21,77,714 voters, including 10,92,966 females and 18 transgenders, to exercise their rights of franchise. Meanwhile, law-enforcement agencies adopted five-tier security measures for making the election successful and meaningful in all constituencies. Stiff contest is likely to take place in the 25 out of total 38 constituencies in Rajshahi division. Simultaneously, either biangular or triangular contest is expected in some of the constituencies based on their acceptance to the voters in general. In all eight districts in Rajshahi division, there are 1,54,60,332 voters and 332 candidates are in the election race in 38 constituencies. A total of 17,451 new voters were registered in 39 parliamentary seats in the region for the upcoming 12th parliament election, raising the voter number to 1,54,73,340. Regional Election Officer Delwar Hossain said there were 1,37,57,889 voters in the previous 11th parliament election. He said there are 77,16,563 female voters and 77,56,676 male voters meaning the male voters outnumbered the female voters. This time, the number of transgender voters is 101. In the region, polling is scheduled to be held in 34,059 booths of 5,436 centers in 39 constituencies of Rajshahi region on January 7 like other parts of the country. But, elections to Naogaon-2 constituency have been postponed due to the death of a candidate. Apart from this, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Biplob Bijoy Talukder has categorically said there will be no irregularity and unfair means in Sunday’s national election. “None will be given scopes for grabbing the centre, casting fake votes and doing forgery in the election. Not a single irregularity and unfair means will be tolerated,” he asserted. The RMP Commissioner came up with the determination while addressing the parade briefing of police officers and forces and ansar-VDP members to be engaged in the polling centres at police line parade ground here today as the chief guest. He warned that drastic action will be taken against those who will be found guilty of debarring the voters from casting votes as judicial magistrates and executive magistrates will conduct mobile courts in election fields. In the briefing parade, 2,195 police and 1,344 ansar-VDP members were present. Bijoy Talukder gave direction to them on how to perform their duties in the centres properly. Apart from this, there will be 47 police mobile teams, 20 striking teams, quick response teams and bomb disposal teams in the field. Four teams of RAB, seven platoons of the BGB and six platoons of army will remain in patrolling. On the other hand, Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Dr Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir told the journalists that 1,000 BGB members, 20,000 police, 3,700 army and 65,000 ansar-VDP people will perform duties for peaceful and successful holding of election in all 38 constituencies in eight districts under the division.
