Province-Level Workshop Concludes in Birendranagar, Focuses on Multi-Hazard Early Warning System.


Birendranagar: A province-level workshop aimed at formulating a strategic action plan for the establishment and operation of a multi-hazard early warning system has concluded in Birendranagar. The workshop, which focused on addressing hazards such as floods, landslides, and lightning in Karnali province, saw active participation from various stakeholders.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Chief District Officer of Surkhet, Shankar Hari Acharya, emphasized the importance of disaster risk reduction in line with the constitutional provisions and the ‘National Disaster Risk Reduction Act, 2074 BS’. He highlighted the need for equipping the emergency operation center with adequate resources to enhance disaster preparedness.

Bhim Bahadur Bhandari, Chair of Barahatal Rural Municipality, stressed the importance of developing a plan with a long-term vision for the management and development of settlements. He noted the effectiveness of the district administration’s information system and suggested the install
ation of sirens in every settlement to enhance disaster alert mechanisms.

The workshop also saw participants recommending the proper management of settlements along riverbanks and the cautious construction of road infrastructure. They highlighted the need to regulate the use of heavy machinery like dozers to mitigate disaster risks. The event was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law of Karnali Province and Practical Action.
