Chattogram: Primary and Mass Education Adviser Professor Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Podder today announced that efforts are in progress to register all private schools. Speaking at a meeting organized by the Office of the Chattogram Divisional Commissioner and the Directorate of Primary Education at the Chattogram Circuit House, Prof Bidhan emphasized the ongoing work to streamline the registration process for private educational institutions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Bidhan noted that the demand to simplify the registration process has been addressed to facilitate easier registration for private schools. He warned that schools failing to register might face consequences such as the discontinuation of textbook supplies. Prof Bidhan highlighted the importance of human resources as the country’s most vital asset, stressing the role of primary education in fostering literacy in speaking, writing, and mathematics.
He expressed concerns over the literacy rates, stating that despite infrastructural and teaching quality improvements, there has been no significant progress in literacy levels. He pointed out that the official literacy rate stands at 78 percent, but the true figure is likely below 50 percent, impacting the nation’s developmental prospects.
Primary and Mass Education Secretary Abu Taher Md. Masud Rana emphasized the need for supervision of educational institutions established through individual initiatives at the upazila and district levels. He recalled the formation of task force committees in 2016 to oversee education quality and institutions, urging the activation of these committees to enhance educational standards.
Md. Ataur Rahman, Divisional Director of the Department of Primary Education in Chattogram, provided an overview of primary education statistics in the division during the meeting. The event, chaired by Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md. Ziauddin, was attended by Director General of the Department of Primary Education Md. Abdul Hakim and other education officials from various districts in the Chattogram Division.
Following the meeting, Prof Bidhan visited the Primary Teachers Training Institute (PTI) in Chattogram to engage with officials and teachers, continuing discussions on improving primary education.
