Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today emphasized the necessity of an elected government to implement state reform proposals. He addressed this issue while speaking virtually from London as the chief guest at a workshop organized by the Dhaka South City unit of BNP at Kadamtali ground in Shyampur.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman stated that an elected government must be prioritized to execute these reform proposals. He urged for the general election to be held as a priority, stressing that the parties which receive the people’s mandate will be responsible for implementing the reform proposals.
Tarique highlighted BNP’s long-standing advocacy for state reform, pointing out that the party was the first to voice such concerns. He noted that the BNP has been advocating for reforms across various sectors for the last two and a half years. He emphasized that the quicker these reform proposals are implemented, the sooner the country can avoid potential crises.
He recalled that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia first proposed the reform initiatives in 2016 through the Vision 2030 announcement. This was followed by a 31-point charter of state reform, introduced two and a half years ago after necessary amendments to Vision 2030.
Tarique warned against delaying reform discussions, cautioning that any delay would allow the Awami League to re-emerge stronger. He highlighted the importance of not giving conspirators the opportunity to take advantage of prolonged discussions.
Responding to questions about whether elections would solve all problems, Tarique acknowledged that not all issues would be immediately resolved but emphasized the importance of elections in allowing citizens to choose their leaders and gradually address the nation’s challenges. He underscored the importance of unity and collaboration among the people and party members to rebuild and advance the country.
Several thousand leaders and activists from all 24 thana units under Dhaka City South BNP, along with 11 front organizations, participated in the workshop. During the session, Tarique answered questions from leaders and workers on issues such as traffic congestion, environmental pollution, health care, and women’s empowerment.
The workshop also featured speeches from BNP’s Commerce Affairs Secretary Alhaj Salahuddin Ahmed and acting chairman’s advisor Mahadi Amin. Dhaka City South BNP Convener Rafiqul Alam Majnu chaired the event, while member secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin moderated it.
