Dhaka: Some 80 teams from the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) will actively monitor markets across the country throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan. This initiative aims to curb illegal hoarding and ensure that essential goods are sold at affordable prices.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the deployment strategy includes at least 10 teams specifically designated for the Dhaka metropolitan area, two teams in each divisional city, and one team in other significant districts. These teams will work in collaboration with district and upazila administrations to maintain market stability.
The decision to mobilize these teams was reached after a series of view-exchange meetings with leaders from various Dhaka metropolis market business associations and the ‘Dokan Malik Samity’ (Shops Owner Association). The meetings focused on ensuring the stockpile and smooth supply of essential commodities during Ramadan, as highlighted by an official handout.
Attendees at the meetings included representatives from multiple agencies, wholesalers, retailers, and prominent super and brand shops such as Aarong, Apex, Yellow, Infinity, Shwapno, Meenabazar, and Agora.
The latest data from DNCRP reveals that between July 1, 2024, and the first week of February 2025, the Directorate conducted approximately 7,553 market drives. These efforts resulted in fines imposed on 15,713 organizations, amounting to a collection of around Taka 10.44 crore from these entities.
