Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized the importance of addressing potential challenges by recognizing the new dimensions of national security. At a program held at Singhadurbar to mark the 24th anniversary of the National Security Council’s secretariat, PM Oli, who also serves as the Council Chairperson, highlighted several causes that could threaten national security. These include cybercrime resulting from the misuse of information technology, trans-border crime, climate change, drug abuse, and the misuse of social networking sites. Despite traditional security challenges, the rapid development of information and technology could increasingly make the country vulnerable.
According to National News Agency Nepal, PM Oli noted the emergence of various new dimensions and trends in the regional and international security environment. He stressed the need to assess and analyze these trends in a timely manner to formulate an appropriate strategy. This approach should consider the effects, impacts, and challenges on national security. He further emphasized the necessity for all relevant bodies, political parties, and others to work in coordination and cooperation to reinforce the country’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.
PM Oli reiterated the need to adopt a ‘whole of the Nation’ approach in the context of national security. Article 266 (1) of the section mandates the formation of a council, led by the Prime Minister, to develop policies concerning Nepal’s overall national interest, security, and defense. The council is also responsible for making recommendations to the government and the Council of Ministers.
