Kathmandu: Senior advocate Prof Dr Bijay Prasad Mishra has been elected as the president of Nepal Bar Association (NBA).
According to National News Agency Nepal, the results of the elections held for the post were released today, showing that Mishra won by a margin of 2,431 votes.
Senior Advocate Ram Krishna Nirala, Chief Electoral Officer of NBA Election 2081, announced that Prof Dr Mishra secured 5,052 votes while his nearest contender, senior advocate Raman Kumar Shrestha, garnered 2,621 votes. The competition for the new leadership was between Mishra’s panel from the Broader Democratic, Progressive, Professional, Nationalist and Inclusive Lawyers Group, and Shrestha’s group from the Professional Lawyers Group.
NBA Election 2081 Chief Electoral Officer Nirala further stated that Padam Prasad Limbu from Koshi Province, Ajay Shankar Jha from Madhes Province, Tej Bahadur Rawal from Bagmati Province, Bhupendra Khanal from Gandaki Province, Krishna Prasad Pokharel from Lumbini Province, Bibash Kumar Basnet from Karnali Province, Siddharaj Ojha from Sudurpaschim Province, and Saraswati Shrestha from Open Women Cluster have been elected as vice-presidents.
Senior advocate Kedar Prasad Koirala emerged victorious for the post of General Secretary with 4,874 votes, surpassing his closest competitor Yagya Mani Neupane, who received 2,367 votes. Jagat Bahadur Karki was elected as the Treasurer.
The elected members include Chiranjibi Tilakyani (Dalit), Surya Kumar Yadav (Madhesi Muslims Outside Kathmandu Valley), Rinku Kumari Yadav (Madhesi Muslims Open), Raj Kumar Shrestha (indigenous nationalities outside Kathmandu Valley), Mangal Sundar Shilpkar (indigenous nationalities open), Indira Acharya (women outside Kathmandu Valley), Kiran Poudel (outside Kathmandu Valley), and Ranjita Karki (women open).
Kiran Neupane, Sharada Gurung, Daman Bahadur Chand, Baburam Aryal, Dr Mukunda Adhikari, and Madhav Mainali have been elected as members of the new working committee of the Bar from the open category. Out of 9,997 registered voters, 7,995 (80 per cent) participated in the election to choose the new working committee. A total of 57 candidates contested for the 25-member executive committee.
