Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has extended his best wishes to all Nepali sisters on the occasion of ‘Dar Khane Din’, a traditional day of feasting observed before the Teej festival. In a heartfelt message shared on his social media account, PM Oli expressed his hope that the day would strengthen the familial bonds between daughters and their natal homes, enriching lives with the fragrance of Nepali culture.
According to National News Agency Nepal, PM Oli elaborated on the cultural significance of ‘Dar Khane Din’, emphasizing its roots in the joint family traditions of oriental society. He highlighted the celebration’s role in deepening family ties between married daughters and their natal homes. Reflecting on historical practices, the Prime Minister recalled how, in earlier times, people would traverse long distances by foot to bring married daughters or sisters home for the Teej festival, in the absence of modern amenities like bridges and communication systems.
PM Oli also noted that traditional songs sung during the Teej festival often depicted the hardships faced in the past. Acknowledging the evolving family dynamics, he remarked on the empowerment and self-reliance of women in contemporary society, which has altered the way ‘Dar Khane Din’ is celebrated. Despite these changes, he emphasized that the day continues to offer an opportunity for three generations to gather under one roof, fostering a sense of closeness.
Traditionally, the ‘Dar’-a special feast-is hosted by the parental family for married women on the day before Teej. This feast serves as a preparation for the fasting observed during the Teej festival.
