Minister Gurung Highlights Libraries as Pillars of Reading Culture Development

Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, emphasized the importance of establishing well-managed and well-equipped libraries across local levels, provinces, federal governments, and communities. He stated that libraries are instrumental in fostering a reading culture, requiring a strong legal foundation, budget, and technological support.

According to National News Agency Nepal, during a program organized by the Library Day Main Celebration Committee on the occasion of the 18th Library Day, Minister Gurung highlighted the role of libraries in education, research, and social transformation. As the government spokesperson, he noted that disparities in knowledge dissemination between urban and rural areas underscore the need to redefine libraries as centers for societal development rather than mere book repositories.

Minister Gurung also underscored the continued relevance of libraries in the digital era, highlighting their role in providing digital access, e-books, research materials, and a safe study environment. He argued that libraries are vital for research, innovation, and skill development.

Library campaigner Indira Dali also addressed the gathering, stressing the need for public libraries at the local level supported by legislative measures. She advocated for the establishment of child-friendly spaces within libraries to nurture a reading culture from an early age.

During the event, Gyanudaya Library and Information Centre, librarian Jagadish Chandra Aryal, and library campaigner Grihaman Shrestha were honored for their contributions to the library movement.
