PM Oli Emphasizes Revitalized Multilateralism for Effective Global Governance System

Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized making the global governance system more effective and efficient by placing the United Nations at its core. Prime Minister Oli, who is on an official visit to China, addressed the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus Meeting today.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) proposed by China will help strengthen the multilateral system by making it more just, inclusive, and equitable for a community with a shared future for humanity, as expressed by PM Oli. He highlighted the extraordinary progress in science, technology, and innovation, which is overshadowed by widening inequalities, economic turbulence, climate emergencies, and border-defying conflicts. PM Oli argued that no nation can secure itself in isolation and that multilateralism is imperative.

Noting that the rule-based order faces challenges and peace and justice remain elusive, he mentioned that multilateralism is in crisis due to its failure to deliver. “Multilateral forums promise much. Promises without progress erode trust. But abandoning multilateralism is not the answer,” asserted PM Oli.

He stated that the SCO will complement the spirit of revitalized multilateralism based on sovereign equality, highlighting the urgency for a revitalized SCO: more united, integrated, and resilient to tackle geopolitical, economic, and ecological shocks threatening our shared future.

Sharing Nepal’s pride as the Dialogue Partner since 2016, he expressed the nation’s aspiration to become a full member. PM Oli emphasized the importance of addressing regional security, as threats cross borders daily, with terrorism and climate change posing significant risks. He noted that Nepal, with the Himalayas at its heart, experiences these challenges directly.

Emerging threats such as cyber-attacks, pandemics, and ecological shocks are not confined to borders, the PM pointed out, stressing the need for regional cooperation to tackle shared challenges in economic, technological, and ecological fronts.

The executive head reiterated Nepal’s commitment to regional cooperation and strong relations with SCO members. PM Oli urged fostering regional peace, progress, and prosperity through enhanced connectivity and dialogue, aiming for a just, inclusive, and resilient order.

He reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation within the SCO, supporting a rules-based, inclusive multilateral system for a sustainable future, and strengthening friendships and partnerships.

PM Oli extended warm greetings and best wishes from the Nepali people for the meeting’s success and the continued progress and prosperity of all SCO Member States.
