Motion Seeking Consideration on Citizenship Bill Approved

Kathmandu: The meeting today of the House of Representatives has approved a motion seeking consideration on the amendments made by the National Assembly to the Nepal Citizenship (Second Amendment) Bill, 2081. The proposal was tabled by Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Home Minister Lekhak responded to queries raised by lawmakers, expressing gratitude to the federal parliament for prioritizing various bills introduced by the current government aimed at providing easy and straightforward service delivery to the citizens. He highlighted that the bill represents a significant historical shift by allowing citizenship to be granted in the mother’s name.

The Home Minister further informed the House that the procedure for obtaining citizenship has been simplified, with particular emphasis on ensuring that no citizen is deprived of their right to citizenship. He assured that the self-declaration provision within the bill will not be misused and emphasized that the government will ensure non-Nepali individuals do not obtain citizenship fraudulently.

Additionally, the Home Minister announced that a separate law will soon be presented in the House to grant citizenship and provide economic and cultural rights to non-resident Nepali citizens, aligning with the provisions of the constitution.
