UML Proposes 251-Member Central Committee and Removal of Age Limit for Leadership

Godawari: Vice Chairman of the CPN UML, Bishnu Poudel, has proposed a 251-member central committee, reducing it from the previous 301 members, during the second statute convention of the party held in Godawari, Lalitpur. The amendment proposal includes significant changes to the party’s leadership structure and membership criteria.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the proposal outlines the removal of the Senior Vice Chairman position and a reduction in the number of vice chairmen from six to three. The structure will now include one chairman, three vice chairmen, one general secretary, three deputy general secretaries, and seven secretaries, amounting to a total of 15 office bearers.

The proposal also suggests maintaining a 99-member politburo, with elections determining up to two-thirds of its members. The politburo and the permanent committee will be managed under the Central Committee. Additionally, Poudel introduced two types of party membership and various central bodies, including a National Convention, Policy Convention, and a Central Advisory Council.

A notable aspect of the amendment is the elimination of the current 70-year age limit for the party chair and office bearers. This change is expected to allow for broader participation in leadership roles. The proposal was presented by Vice Chairman Poudel during a closed session of the convention.
