International Day of Charity Honors Mother Teresa’s Legacy

Kathmandu: The International Day of Charity is being celebrated globally today, commemorating the philanthropic contributions of Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to aiding the impoverished. This observance, initiated in 2012, aims to support communities afflicted by inequalities, poverty, and various hardships.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the day serves to raise awareness and mobilize individuals, NGOs, and stakeholders worldwide to engage in volunteer and philanthropic endeavors, as highlighted by the United Nations Organization (UNO). The UN emphasizes that charity acts as a catalyst for social innovation, poverty alleviation, and inclusive development.

In selecting September 5 as the International Day of Charity, the UN honors the anniversary of Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s passing. Mother Teresa, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her efforts to combat poverty and distress, is remembered for her impactful work which also promotes peace, according to the UN.

The United Nations 20
30 Agenda for Sustainable Development prioritizes eradicating poverty in all its forms as a central global mission. Poverty encompasses more than just a lack of income; it involves hunger, social exclusion, unsafe living conditions, and limited access to education and healthcare. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) necessitates robust partnerships among governments, civil society, businesses, and charitable organizations.
