FNJ Calls on President to Navigate Current Uncertainty via Constitutional Means

Kathmandu: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has called upon the President to spearhead efforts to find a constitutional and political resolution to the prevailing challenges, aiming to conclude the ongoing transitional phase peacefully.

According to National News Agency Nepal, FNJ Chairperson Nirmala Sharma issued a statement today urging the nation to pursue a seamless resolution through the mechanisms and institutions outlined in the current constitution. The FNJ underscored the importance of the President’s role in initiating dialogue with Gen Z representatives to address the country’s issues and highlighted the necessity for security bodies to support the formation of an interim government swiftly. The initiative for this should originate from the President, and PAPAD, a coalition of six professional organizations including the FNJ, has expressed readiness to facilitate the process.

The Federation emphasized that all political issues should be addressed from the President’s Office rather than the Army Headquarters. It acknowledged the commendable role played by the army in maintaining peace and security. FNJ appealed to all stakeholders to act responsibly and sensitively during this critical period, stressing the need to uphold the democratic republic while addressing structural reform demands from Gen Z.

The FNJ reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for democracy, human rights, press freedom, and freedom of expression. With the government having resigned and no new government yet formed, the country is in a transitional state, necessitating a prompt resolution as outlined in their statement.

The FNJ also paid tribute to those who lost their lives during protests demanding good governance and anti-corruption measures and wished for the swift recovery of the injured. Chairperson Sharma expressed regret over journalists and media being targeted by protesters, despite their active role in informing the public and supporting peace and democracy.
