PM Karki Urges Private Sector to Overcome Adversity with Government Support

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has urged the private sector to rise from the challenges posed by recent events, assuring full government support during a discussion with private sector representatives at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar. Both the state and the private sector face significant challenges following widespread damage to businesses and industries during the Gen-Z protests.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Prime Minister Karki emphasized the government’s commitment to the rule of law and urged the private sector not to be disheartened by the recent destruction. She highlighted the importance of mutual support during these times, stating, “Do not be distressed at this time, we are with you.”

In her address, PM Karki assured that the government would operate within its legal rights and take initiatives to provide relief for affected businesses. She encouraged the private sector to demonstrate resilience, with the state providing necessary assistance.

Addressing economic measures, PM Karki discussed the potential for controlling imports and tax adjustments to promote internal production, though she clarified there would be no immediate tax increases. Instead, efforts will focus on evaluating losses and providing relief.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the upcoming election is the top priority, along with maintaining control over corruption and ensuring good governance. Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal, also present at the discussion, announced plans for a corrective package based on private sector suggestions to improve the national economy.

Finance Minister Khanal indicated that a coherent plan, coordinating financial and monetary policies, is in the works, with a proposal already submitted to the Cabinet. He emphasized the importance of the private sector fulfilling its responsibilities to help resolve the current crisis.

Home Minister Omprakash Aryal highlighted the Ministry of Home Affairs’ top priority of normalizing the current situation. He assured the private sector that measures are in place to prevent further conflict and maintain balance, with directives issued to ministry bodies.

Minister Aryal also revealed plans to form a judicial investigation commission to study the incidents of arson and vandalism during the protests, aiming to gather factual insights. Despite recent challenges, he noted improved relations between citizens, the private sector, and security forces.

Chief Secretary Eaknarayan Aryal underscored the need for immediate steps to revive the economy, acknowledging past challenges like COVID-19, earthquakes, and blockades. He hinted at potential Cabinet decisions on customs concessions and subsidies to aid economic recovery.
