Constitution Day and National Day: Gen-Z Demonstration Reflects Dissatisfaction Over Corruption, Says PM Karki

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has stated that the demonstrations and movements led by Gen-Z youth on September 8 and 9 reflect the aspirations of the young generation, growing public awareness, and dissatisfaction with prevailing corruption in the country. Addressing the Constitution Day and National Day, 2082, at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, PM Karki emphasized the need to recognize that this movement emerged partly due to shortcomings in governance, prosperity, and development in line with the Constitution’s spirit.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the Prime Minister remarked that the Gen-Z movement also stems from the failure to commit firmly to democratic values and norms, including federal republican governance, civil liberties, human rights, press freedom, judiciary independence, and good governance. She highlighted the role of advancements in information technology and citizen-friendly governance systems internationally in shaping young people’s awareness.

The Prime Minister noted that the issues raised by the young generation-employment opportunities, quality of life, government transparency, legal equality, corruption control, good governance, and development-are national aspirations shared across generations. She assured that the government is committed to addressing these concerns and working in line with public expectations.

PM Karki acknowledged the challenges of reconstructing public infrastructure damaged during the Gen-Z movement and urged the private sector and citizens to engage in reconstruction and development efforts. She emphasized the importance of conducting elections on schedule and called for national unity in addressing governance grievances.

During the Constitution Day celebration, PM Karki extended heartfelt greetings to Nepali citizens, commemorating a decade of the Federal Democratic Republican Constitution. She highlighted the Constitution’s role in shaping Nepal’s future and aspirations, emphasizing federalism, democracy, and social justice.

The Prime Minister underscored the need to evaluate the federal democratic republic system, reflecting on achievements and shortcomings since the Constitution’s enactment. She stressed the importance of transparency, zero tolerance for corruption, and efficient public service delivery across government tiers.

PM Karki expressed her commitment to managing the transition and conducting general elections within six months, emphasizing the necessity of fair and impartial elections. She stressed the importance of elections in transferring the people’s aspirations and trust for the next five years.

On Constitution Day, PM Karki paid tribute to martyrs of past movements and the recent Gen-Z movement, expressing condolences to bereaved families and grief over damages caused during these events. The celebration was attended by key political figures, government officials, and foreign mission representatives in Nepal.
