International Nuclear Elimination Day Marked by Global Awareness Programs

New york: The International Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is being observed across various countries today, featuring numerous programs aimed at raising awareness about nuclear disarmament. This annual day of observance has been recognized since 2013 following a call by the United Nations, although the initial proposal for global nuclear disarmament dates back to the UN General Assembly in 1946.

According to National News Agency RSS, this day offers the global community an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to the priority of achieving worldwide nuclear disarmament. It serves as a platform to educate both the public and political leaders about the tangible benefits of eliminating nuclear weapons and the social and economic burdens of maintaining them, as highlighted on the UN website.

The primary purpose of the International Day is to advance the goal of completely eradicating nuclear weapons by increasing public awareness and education on the threats these weapons pose to humanity and th
e urgent need for their total elimination. Currently, there are approximately 12,241 nuclear weapons in possession of various countries, according to the United Nations.

On this occasion, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged nations possessing nuclear weapons to commit to pledges for the total elimination of these arms.
