PM Karki Discusses Election Preparation with EC Officials

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki held a meeting with the Election Commission (EC) officials Tuesday, focusing on the election to the House of Representatives announced for May 5, 2026.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the meeting took place at the Singha Durbar-based Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. Discussions centered on the cooperation essential from the government and political parties to implement the election calendar, which was published by the EC on Monday.

The meeting was attended by key government figures including Finance Minister Rameshore Prasad Khanal, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anil Kumar Sinha, and Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari.

It is notable that this interim government, led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, was formed on September 12 in response to the Gen Z protests held on September 8-9. The protests led to the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the announcement of fresh elections for May 5 next year.

During the meeting, EC office-bearers assured the Prime Minister of their commitment to conducting the elections in a free, fair, and impartial manner. They also highlighted the need for the government to manage and mobilize necessary resources to facilitate the election process.
